If your computer is having performance issues, such as taking a while to open anything on Google Chrome, there are a few things you can do to try to address this issue without having to wait for a technician. They are:
1) Make sure Windows has all of it's updates
2) Make sure Google Chrome is updated
3) Clear the cache in Google Chrome.
UPDATING WINDOWS
Automatic
This is the first step to check. It can take some time to complete this. Luckily, our desktops are set up to automatically keep up to date and reboot overnight, however the process may not finish if the computer thinks it's still in use(such as email being left open). To make sure it will update and reboot, sign out of the desktop at the end of the day. You can do this by opening the Start menu on the bottom left of the screen, click on the person icon on the left, and click "Sign Out."
MANUAL
You can also update your machine manually. You can do this by pressing the "Windows" + "i" key at the same time to open your settings. Then select the option that says "Update & Security", and click on the box that says "Check for updates". Note: Even if it says "You're up to date", verify by clicking the box to make sure it still says "You're up to date". If you see a box mentioning optional updates(usually in blue), be sure to click on the optional updates, then select and download them as well. NOTE: Do not select the option to "Upgrade to Windows 11". If your machine it already Windows 11, do not worry.
UPDATING GOOGLE CHROME
The next thing to check is if Google Chrome is up to date. Google Chrome should update automatically every time you open Google, however, it doesn't always catch. To update/verify, open Google Chrome and in the top right corner, you should see a set of 3 dots. Click on it and at the bottom of the pop-up menu, there should be a "Help" button. Move the mouse cursor above it, and another mini menu should appear, with an option that says "About Google Chrome." Click on it and it will take you to the page to tell you if Google is up to date or if it needs to check for updates.
CLEAR GOOGLE CACHE
The last simple fix for this issue is to clear your cache in Google Chrome. To clear the Google cache, open up Google chrome and click the 3 dots at the top right corner, then click on "Settings". On the settings page, on the left hand side, click on "Security and Privacy". In the middle of the page, you should see an option that says "Clear Browsing Data". Click on it and a pop up should appear. In the pop-up, you should see an option that says "Time range" with a drop-down menu. We recommend you change it to "All time", as that will clear the most data. Then click on "Clear data" on the bottom right. After a few seconds, the cache should be cleared. We recommend you close and re-open Google Chrome.
After following these steps, if you continue to have issue, please let the technology team know by putting in a work order. Thank you.
